Project E30 — Back from the Dead

Sometimes a job walks through the door that tells you everything about what this place is for. An E30, unfinished, undriven for six years. One request from the owner — get it back on the road.

Simple enough on paper.

Opening the boxes

The car came with a new engine. Or rather, it came with boxes of parts that were supposed to become a new engine. This is where it gets interesting. We started working through it and almost immediately it became clear this
wasn't going to be a straight build. Stripped threads, broken sensors, missing parts — the kind of thing that only reveals itself once you're deep in it.

Every job uncovered another job. That's the nature of a project that's sat unfinished for years. Things corrode, things get lost, things get bodged by whoever was in it before. You just have to work through it methodically
and not let it beat you.

What we found

The cams needed replacing. The engine needed a complete inspection and rebuild rather than just an assembly. Then there was the wiring — sections of it burnt, unusable, gone. That's not a repair job, that's a recreation.
Tracing what was there, understanding what it should be, and building it back properly from scratch.

All of this while keeping a close eye on the customer's budget. That's the real challenge on a job like this — doing it right without letting the scope run away. Knowing which corners you can't cut and being honest about
it.

Where we're at

We're still working through it, but the end is in sight. Our goal is to have it out of the workshop within the next month.

Six years this car has sat. The owner hasn't been behind the wheel of it in all that time. Getting to hand those keys back and watching him drive it out — that's the part of this job that doesn't get old.
